  • Description

The people of singapore went to the polls today (23 December) in the country's fifth general election since independence.

No-body, however, is in any doubt that Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's ruling People's Action Party will rout left-wing opposition groups. Despite only nine days being allocated by the government for campaigning, some opposition parties did stage rallies in Singapore's Fullerton Square. Among them was the Workers' Party, led by Mr. J.B. Jeyaretnam.

Mr. Jeyaretnam accused the government of acting solely on behalf of what he termed "those few exercising power" -- but the fact remains that during Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's 17 years of government the standard of living in Singapore has risen to one of the highest in Asia. Mr. Lee also held a rally before the election -- and warned voters that if they cast in favour of the opposition they would be endorsing "a heap of impossible promises."
The leader of another opposition party, Dr. Lee Siew Choh of the Socialist Front, spoke to crowds before the election, saying that a number of his followers had been arrested and detained without trial.

Observers in Singapore predict that the most the opposition can hope for is a small number of seats in parliament. Already 16 P.A.P candidates, including six cabinet ministers, have been returned unopposed.
