  • Description

Jimmy Connors of the United States won his first victory in a major championship by taking the Australian Open Championships Men's Singles title on Tuesday (January 1).

He beat Phil Dent of Australia 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in a duel which lasted 140 minutes. Dent, who got few lucky breaks in the first two sets, served powerfully and volleyed crisply in the third which he took affaire breaking Connors' service in the seventh game.

But he was unable to maintain the momentum and Connors came back in the fourth set to take set and match.

The prize money of 6,500 Australian dollars (GBP 4,100 sterling) was described by Connors as "very handy". He and his fiancee Chris Evert, who lost the Women's Singles final to Evonne Goolagong, plan to marry in either May or September -- "before Wimbledon or after Forest Hills."
