    NCHANGA/CHINGOLA ATHLETICS' CLUB TEAM ON SATURDAY WON THE 28 MILE (45 KMS) ZAMBIAN ROAD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS. THEIR TOTAL TIME OF 2 HOURS, 26 MINUTES 18.8 SECONDS WAS MORE THAN A MINUTE SLOWER THAN LAST YEAR'S WINNING TIME BY THE ZAMBIAN POLICE LILAYI TEAM.

    THE RACE WAS RUN IN EIGHT LEGS, STARTING ON THE LUSAKA ROAD AND FINISHING IN THE TOWN OF LUANSHYA. IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE THIRD LEG THAT THE NCHANGA/CHINGOLA TEAM TOOK THE LEAD THROUGH MPANDE, WHO OVERTOOK THE ZAMBIAN POLICE LILAYI'S TEAM RUNNER MBAO. EARLY IN THE RACE THE POLICE, WESTERN DIVISION HAD LED THE RACE, BUT THEIR SECOND RUNNER, PARATA, WAS OVERTAKEN WHEN HE TIRED BADLY ON THE SECOND LEG.

    TOWARDS THE END OF THE RACE THE NCHANGA/CHINGOLA TEAM BUILT UP A CONSIDERABLE LEAD DESPITE THEIR COMPARATIVELY POOR START. THE WINNING TEAM WAS MADE UP OF S. MWALE, M. SILUPUMBWE, L. MPANDE, E. MWEMBA, J. SINYANGWE, A. SILWIMBA, O. BWALYA AND P. KUNDA. THE WINNERS WERE PRESENTED WITH A TROPHY BY W.H. DALFORCE, SPORTS' EDITOR OF THE ZAMBIA MAIL.
