  • Description

KOREAN MARINES OPERATING IN SOUTH VIETNAM RECENTLY LAUNCHED A FULL-SCALE SEA-BORNE LANDING ON BATANGAN PENINSULAR ON SOUTH VIETNAM'S CENTRAL COAST, 345 MILES (555 KMS) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON. THIS VIET CONG STRONGHOLD WAS ATTACKED AS PART OF THE KOREANS' OPERATION DRAGON-FIRE.

THE RAID WAS MADE BY LANDING CRAFT WITH AIR COVER AND WAS THE BIGGEST AMPHIBIOUS OPERATION YET LAUNCHED BY THE KOREAN MARINES SINCE THEY ARRIVED IN SOUTH VIETNAM TWO YEARS AGO.

IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE KOREANS, LAND-BASED UNITED STATES MARINES SEALED OFF THE LAND SIDE OF THE PENINSULAR AS THE KOREANS LANDED. HEAVY FIGHTING TOOK PLACE ON THE BEACHES, BUT THE KOREAN TROOPS SUCCESSFULLY ESTABLISHED A BEACHHEAD, KILLED SOME 20 VIET CONG AND TOOK A NUMBER OF PRISONERS.

OPERATION DRAGON-FIRE THEN CONTINUED. ARMOURED VEHICLES WERE LANDED AND BEGAN TO CLEAR THE JUNGLE, WHILE THE MARINES CARRIED OUT FURTHER SEARCH-AND-DESTROY OPERATIONS DEEP INTO THE PENINSULAR.
