  • Description

MORE THAN 2,000 REFUGEES FROM NIGERIA ARE BEING CARED FOR BY GOVERNMENT AND RED CROSS OFFICIALS IN THE COTONOU DISTRICT OF NEIGHBOURING DAHOMEY. WHILE SOME FLED ACROSS THE BORDER DURING THE UPRISING AT THE END OF JANUARY, MANY OTHERS HAD IN FACT BEEN FLEEING INTO DAHOMEY SINCE THE DISTURBANCES IN WESTERN NIGERIA LAST YEAR.

THE FOOD (DONATED BY AMERICA) BEING DISTRIBUTED HAS BEEN LARGELY PROVIDED BY THE RED CROSS IN NIGERIA. THE ORGANISATION HAS SET UP A HEADQUARTERS ON THE NIGERIAN SIDE OF THE BORDER TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM. GRANTS OF MONEY ARE BEING MADE TO HELP RELIEVE SOME OF THE REFUGEES' HARDSHIPS.

MOST OF THE REFUGEES FLED TO DAHOMEY DURING THE PERIOD OF VIOLENCE THAT SWEPT WESTERN NIGERIA LATE LAST YEAR, PRIOR TO THE FALL OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

LAST WEEK, THE NEW MILITARY CENTRAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA CALLED ON THE REFUGEES TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMES, NOW THAT CONDITIONS IN THE COUNTRY ARE MORE SETTLED.
