  • Description

More than 50 countries, including all the major Western industrial nations, are meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, in an effort to reach a world cereals agreement. They're bargaining intensively to produce by early April a comprehensive package deal for approval by their Governments before April the 30th.

The talks are part of the four-year-old Kennedy round of tariff-cutting talks in Geneva. The talks, launched at the initiative of the United States, aims at halving important duties on industrial goods with a minimum of exceptions. It also hopes to liberalise international trade in farm products.

Some industrial nations think original proposals to provide 10,000,000 tons of cereals a year to meet food needs in the under-developed nations were too ambitious. The Americans are agreeable to paying a 40 per cent share of the aid programme, with the six European Common Market countries contributing 25 per cent and Britain five per cent.
