  • Description

AUSTRALIA IS SUFFERING FROM ONE OF THE MOST SEVERE BROUGHTS IN ITS HISTORY. THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR IN WHICH EXTENSIVE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN AFFECTED. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT GBP200-MILLION STERLING WORTH OF RURAL PRODUCTION HAVE BEEN LOST IN THE LAST TWO FINANCIAL YEARS. TYPICAL IS BONNIE DOON, A BOATING TOWNSHIP, 100 MILES NORTH EAST OF MELBOURNE.

THE VAST EILDON RESERVOIR HAS SHRUNK TO HALF ITS NORMAL SIZE, LEAVING THE ROAD AND RAIL BRIDGES NEAR BONNIE DOON HIGH AND DRY.

A MUDDY CREEK SLUGGISHLY FLOWS WHERE THERE WAS ONCE 50 FEET OF WATER.

THE ORIGINAL BONNIE DOON WAS INUNDATED IN 1956, WHEN THE NEW EILDON DAM WAS BUILT. UNTIL RECENTLY WATER SKIERS AND OTHER BOATING ENTHUSIASTS USED IT.

THE AVENUE OF HONOUR, FOR EXAMPLE, STILL STANDS IN TRIBUTE TO THE DEAD OF TWO WORLD WARS.

THE PEOPLE OF BONNIE DOON HAVE BUILT THIS LOW DAM ACROSS THE CREEK IN AN ATTEMPT TO RESTORE THE TOWN'S WATER SUPPLY, WHICH WAS CUT OFF RECENTLY WHEN THE WATER LEVEL DROPPED BELOW THE PUMP INTAKE.

THE TOWN'S STORAGE TANK HOLDS ONLY FOUR DAY'S SUPPLY. WHEN THAT IS GONE, THE PEOPLE WILL HAVE ONLY THE WATER IN THEIR HOUSEHOLD TANKS.
