Background: Lagos University students pasted placards on the windows of the United States embassy and damaged a gate to the building in a demonstration against American policy in Angola on Sunday (11 January).

About 200 students chanted slogans and carried tree branches in symbolic support for the left wing Luanda based government of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

The United States are believed to have been arming the MPLA's opponents in the civil war - the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) and the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). The United States has also been accused of training mercenaries to fight with UNITA and the FNLA.

The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Mr. Wahab Goodluck was one of several speakers who addressed the student rally at Rowe Park. He told the crowd it was a shame that Cuba had to send her troops all the way to Africa to free "the blackmen".

Cuba has been estimated to have 10,000 troops fighting with the MPLA and the Soviet Union 7,000 troops.

Another speaker, Dr. Opeyemi Ola of Lagos University said that the Organisation of African Unity had been urged to form an African high command immediately. The command according to Dr. Ola would fight in Angola to maintain African interests there.

The United Stats are believed to have been arming the MPLA's opponents in the civil war - the National Front for the Liberation of Angola - FNLA - and the Union for the Total Independence of Angola - UNITA. The United States has also been accused of training mercenaries to fight with UNITA and the FNLA.

The students then moved from Rowe Park where the rally took place to the United States embassy. Another speaker, Dr. Opeyemi Ola had told them that the Organisation of African Unity had been urged to form an African High Command immediately. The demonstration was the fourth in Nigeria in as many days against American policy on Angola.
