  • Description

Liverpool continue as leaders of the First Division after a close, fiercely fought game against Cryetal Palace in Liverpool on Saturday (30 December). It was the twenty-first consecutive home victory for Liverpool in almost a year.

After holding off a concerted Crystal Palace attack late in the first half of play, Liverpool scored with a goal by Peter Cormack. In the 67th minute of play he headed a left-wing cross from Alec Lindsay past goal keeper John Jackson -- the ball going in off a post.

The narrow victory ensured Liverpool of their leadership in the First Division, but also meant that Crystal Palace stayed near the bottom of the division.

SYNOPSIS: Crystal Palace kick off in their match against Liverpool on Saturday. Liverpool -- leaders in the First Division -- immediately went on the attack. Playing on the home ground, Liverpool was trying to extend a string of twenty consecutive home victories against a team far down in the First Division standings.

But despite continued thrusts at the Crystal Palace goal Liverpool could not score in the first half. Emlyn Hughes, in a dramatic seventy-yard run, took the ball to within ten yards of the goal, but could not keep control for a shot at the Crystal Palace net.

At half time, neither team had been able to score. It looked as if Crystal Palace -- after containing the dramatic field-work of Liverpool might be able to come back in the second half. But, again it was Liverpool on the attack.

Though Liverpool had difficulty finding the right combination to penetrate the Crystal Palace defences, they were not to be denied. In the sixty-seventh minute of play Alec Lindsay lobbed a ball to Peter Cormack who headed it past Crystal Palace goal keeper John Jackson...Cormack's goal was the only score in the game and insured Liverpool's leadership position in the First Division standings. For Crystal Palace the defeat was a biter one. After containing the strong Liverpool team for most of the game, the loss puts them near the bottom of the first Division standings.
