  • Description

Lascar Row, more commonly known as Cat Street, is a Hong Kong landmark noted for its antique market of shops and stalls, but earlier this week the local government served three months' notice on eight tenanted pre-war buildings there. The land is required for an urban renewal pilot scheme on the island, and the expulsion of some 500 inhabitants from the building has meant more than future hardship and inconvenience for the families involved..... it has provoked an outcry from historical conservationists and tourist organisations. Cat Street has been a favourite haunt among particularly United States tourists in Hong Kong, for many years. As a centre of hard bargaining and haggling for a vast selection of antique merchandise, Cat Street has been underlined in countless tourist guides. The bulk of the trade is porcelain-ware produced during the Sung, Ming, and Ching dynasties for export to Southeast Asia, India, the Middle Est, and Europe, after the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century.
