  • Description

Anglo-Rhodesian settlement talks moved into a reportedly decisive phase on Friday (19 November) at Salisbury after four days of preliminary sounding.

Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith and British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home arranged a meeting of their full negotiating teams. These would meet to iron out a peace formula for the six-year-old dispute over the breakaway British colony's self-declared independence.

A top official in the British delegation -- Mr. Martin Le Quesne -- has since been instructed to fly back to London to make a first-hand report on the state of the talks to British Prime Minister Edward Heath.

SYNOPSIS: On Friday in Salisbury, Prime Minister Ian Smith's office was the scene of Anglo-Rhodesian settlement talks. British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home arrived to continue talks which are now reportedly moving into a decisive phase.

The odds were hardening on an early end to the six-year-old dispute over the breakaway British colony's self-declared independence. The British team went into the first full negotiating session with their Rhodesian counterparts after four days of preliminary sounding.

For Lord Goodman it was not the first visit to Salisbury to pave the way for a peace formula. As the British Government's legal expert he has helped to prepare the ground for these top-level talks.

An official in the British delegation -- Mr. Martin Le Quesne -- is to return to London to make a first-hand report on the state of the talks to Prime Minister Edward Heath.
