The United States Secretary of State, Mr. Cyrus Vance arrived in the Greek capital of Athens on Saturday (21 January) for talks with Greek leaders on the country's dispute with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus.
SYNOPSIS: The visit had attracted widespread opposition from left-wing groups and there were demonstrations in Athens, but security measures kept the airport clear. Mr. Vance was greeted by Greek Foreign Minister Panayotis Papaligouras. His visit comes three days after a mission to Athens, Nicosia and Ankara by United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim in an attempt to revive talks on Cyprus. The Mediterranean island was one of the subjects Mr. Vance was to discuss with Greek Prime Minister Mr Constantine Karamanlis and other ministers, but he revealed nothing of his plans at the airport.
The leaders are also expected to discuss Greek relations with the United States and NATO, plus the disputes between Greece and Turkey over Aegean territorial rights. In Athens, Mr. Vance was greeted by Mr. Karamanlis who, earlier this week, said he was prepared to meet his Turkish counterpart, Mr. Bulent Ecevit, to discuss Cyprus, if adequate preparations were made. Observers believe Mr. Vance could help to arrange such a meeting.
