    As part of the celebrations marking the twelfth anniversary of Uganda's independence, a mass parade of troops, students and schoolchildren was held at Nakivubu stadium in Kampala on Tuesday (8 October).

    President Idi Amin attended the parade and, after inspecting the troops, watched the hour-long march-past of soldiers and members of youth organisations led by a massed band.

    Also present in the stadium were government minsters nd officials, heads of diplomatic missions to Uganda - including the Soviet ambassador -- and Kampala city officials.

    Later, in a broadcast to the nation on the occasion of independence day, President Amin paid tribute to the former British administration of the country. he said that although Britain had consistently exploited the country, it was true that the administration as positive.

    He went on to say that rises in the price of imported oil was posing a very big crisis for Uganda and was forcing the nation to curtail imports essential to the expansion of its economy.

    But he added that the future for Uganda was very bright and the government was pursuing its crucial role of rejuvenating the economy and seeing that Uganda attained a healthy, self-reliant position.
