Strongmen from 15 countries competed in the John Williams International Weightlifting Tournament at Cardiff, Wales this week (26, 27 November). Winner of the 60 kilograms class was West German, B Bachfisch, with Spain's J. Casado in second place and Canadian M. Mercier was third.
SYNOPSIS: This is the 'snatch' section of the competition, in which the weight must be lifted from the ground to vertically above the head in one movement. Many of the contestants found it hard going.
In the final part of the 'clean and jerk', each lifter was allowed three attempts at different weights, though that was not enough for some.
Mercier of Canada 'snatched' 105 kilos (232 pounds). He finished with a total of 237???? kilos (523 pounds) and third place in the 60 kilogram (132 pounds) class.

West German B. Bachfisch finally took the honours in the 60 kilogram (32 pounds) section. This 14???? kilos (314 pound) 'jerk' broke the previous West German record. Added to his 'snatch' of 112???? kilos (262 pounds), it gave him a total of 255 kilos (576 pounds).
P. Rabczewski of Poland won the 82???? kilos (181 pounds) class with a total lift of 320 kilos (705 pounds).
