Background: Gert Potgieter, the powerfully-built South African who a year ago broke his neck while playing rugby, yesterday at Cardiff Empire Games romped through the 440 yards hurdles in a completely relaxed style and won in a world record time of 49.7 secs.

It was only a few weeks ago that the American Olympic champion G. Davis became the first man to beat 50 secs. for this event.

Potgieter, tremendously fast between hurdles and prepared to lead with the "wrong" foot (as he did once in his semi-final), won by 10 yards. The holder, D.F. Lean, of Australia, was second in 50.6--a time which in itself was good enough to beat the previous Empire and Commonwealth records. Lean, however, appeared unsettled when the fair-haired Potgieter, in the fifth lane, caught him up so early in the race, after only three hurdles, Lean being in the sixth lane.

A quarter-mile hurdles clash now between American Davis and Potgieter (who lost to Davis in the Olympics) is surely the promoter's ??? dream.
