    Thousands of Black Panther supporters attended a rally near Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, on Friday (1 May).

    The rally was part of a massive three day pretest against New Haven authorities for bringing to trial eight Black Panthers, including their leader Bobby Seal on a murder charge.

    Friday's rally went off peacefully but police fired tear gas against demonstrators on Saturday (2 May) after rock throwing started. Four thousand army troops and marines were standing by at bases in neighbouring states in case of further trouble.

    The announcement of United States military action in Cambodia added an anti-war dimension to the rally which was attended by an estimated 12,000 people.
