  • Description

Sixth seed, Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia, won his way through to the quarter finals of the United States Open Law Tennis Championships at Forest Hills on tuesday (4 September), when he beat the australian, John Alexander. Kodes, the reigning Wimbledon champion, won the match in straight sets... 7-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The Czechoslovakian appears to have regained the form which took his through to the final of the U.S. Open two years ago. He gave nothing away to Alexander, who said after the match he seemed to be "treading water" -- not getting anywhere. Alexander played a predictable game, unlike his opponent, who was much more flexible.

Alexander had three break points for a five-four lead in the first set, but was beaten by fierce ground strokes from Kodes in the tie-breaker. In the second set, Alexander again failed to capitalise, when he had set point -- against service -- at 5-45. In the quarter finals Kodes will meet Nikki Pilic of Yugoslavia.

Also through to the quarter-finals are Stan Smith, of the United States who meets Onny ???arun, of New Zealand; Vijuy Amritraj of India who meets Ken Rosewall of Australia; and Jimmy Connors, U.S.A., who meets join Newcombe of Australia.

The game was played in temperatures of nearly a hundred degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Centigrade) -- the worst heatwave in the seven-year history of the titles. Four doctors and a nurse were working full-time, and more than 150 spectators have been treated so far.
