  • Description

President Jomo Kenyatta visited an electric factory in Nairobi on Wednesday (7 May).

The President arrived at the factory, which has been constructed by the Dutch firm Philips, and was greeted by the Kenyan Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. James Osogo.

In his speech on arrival the President said the developments were a major step forward for light industry in Kenya. After unveiling a plaque to commemorate the occasion the President began a conducted tour of the factory complex.

The factory is the result of an agreement signed by the firm with the Kenyan Government is 1965. Gramophone records have been made by Philips in Kenya for several years, and the electric light industry was established in 1969. Also in the factory is an ultra-modern recording studio and the central workshops for the professional equipment section of the firm's activities. The industry already provides employment for more than 100 Kenyans and also gives them the opportunity to learn new skills in the electronics area.

At the end of the tour of the factory the President was shown one of the 56 bicycles which the firm has given to its employees.
