  • Description

In Libya, thirty people -- including two former Cabinet Ministers -- appeared before a special military court on Tuesday (February 10th) on charges of plotting to overthrow the Government.

The three-man military tribunal set up to try the alleged plotters adjourned the trial until February 21st after a 65-minute hearing.

The accused, all servicemen, are headed by ex-Defence Minister, Lieutenant Colonel Adam Al-Hawaz and former Interior Minister. Lieutenant Colonel Moussa Ahmed. They are charged with plotting to overthrow the Libyan Revolutionary Government last December.

In court, Al-Hawaz's defence lawyer said his client was a schizophrenic and asked for him to have a psychiatric examination.

(Colonel Gaddafi, leader of the military junta which overthrew King Idris in September, 1969, said two months ago that Al-Hawaz tried to kill himself when accused of plotting.)
The military court sessions are being held in public.
