    COLIN LEWIS, OF ENGLAND, WON THE FIRST STAGE OF THE TOUR OF BRITAIN CYCLE RACE WHICH BEGAN AT BLACKPOOL TODAY (SUNDAY). TWO SPANISH RIDERS, VINCENTE CARRIL AND ANDRES INCERA, WERE PLACED SECOND AND THIRD.

    TEN TEAMS OF SEVEN RIDERS EACH ARE COMPETING IN THE 14 DAY TOUR WHICH COVERS 1,400 MILES (2,253 KILOMETRES). IT IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S LEADING AMATEUR CYCLE TOURS.

    RIDERS COMPETING COME FROM DENMARK, SPAIN, POLAND, SWITZERLAND, ENGLAND, SCOTLAND AND THE COMMONWEALTH.

    LEWIS, A 23-YEAR-OLD PRINTER, WON THE OPENING STAGE BY COVERING THE 96 MILES (154 KILOMETRES) FROM BLACKPOOL TO BUXTON, THROUGH THE PEAK DISTRICT IN THREE HOURS 56 MINUTES, 46 SECONDS. HE WON BY FIVE SECONDS FROM THE SPANIARD CARRIL. INCERA WAS THIRD IN 3 HOURS 58 MINUTES 13 SECONDS.

    THE FIRST 50 MILES (80 KILOMETRES) WERE COVERED OVER DRY ROADS BUT THEN RAIN BEGAN. IT SOON BECAME INTENSE AND FLOODED THE ROADS IN PLACES.

    WHEN THE ROADS WERE DRY, JOSE ARTINADO OF SPAIN LED THE FIELD BUT AFTER ABOUT 85 MILES (135 KILOMETRES) LEWIS STEPPED UP THE PLACE AND WENT TO THE FRONT.

    CARRIL PUT IN A SPIRITED FINISH BUT JUST FAILED TO CATCH LEWIS.
