ANOTHER 17 PEOPLE WERE ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL IN THE TYPHOID-STRICKEN CITY OF ABERDEEN TODAY (FRIDAY), BUT, ACCORDING TO LOCAL HEALTH OFFICIALS, THERE ARE SIGNS THAT THE EPIDEMIC MAY BE UNDER CONTROL.

COMMENTING ON THE LATEST FIGURES -- 351 IN HOSPITAL -- THE CITY'S MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH, DR. IAN MACQUEEN, SAID THAT TODAY'S FIGURES WERE THE FIRST REALLY HOPEFUL SIGN SINCE THE OUTBREAK BEGAN.

TONIGHT, THERE WERE 302 CONFIRMED CASES AND 49 SUSPECTS COMPARED WITH TUESDAY'S TOTAL OF 292 CONFIRMED CASES AND 42 SUSPECTED.

HOWEVER, THERE WERE NEW DEVELOPMENTS TODAY IN ENGLAND WITH TWO SUSPECTED GASES REPORTED. ONE AT SHREWSBURY, WHERE A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL WAS TAKEN FROM A TRAIN, AND A STOKE MANDEVILLE, NORTH OF LONDON, WHERE A MAN WAS ALSO ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL AS A TYPHOID SUSPECT. BOTH HAD VISITED ABERDEEN DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS.

A REPORT THAT A SECOND DEATH FROM THE DISEASE HAD OCCURRED IN ABERDEEN, WAS DENIED, HOWEVER, BY CITY OFFICIALS. THEY STATED THAT THE MAN CONCERNED WAS NOT A TYPHOID SUSPECT. THE FIRST DEATH OF A TYPHOID SUSPECT TOOK PLACE A WEEK AGO, BUT IT WAS POINTED OUT THAT THE SUSPECT, AN ELDERLY WOMAN, WAS SUFFERING FROM OTHER DISEASES WHICH WERE PROBABLY FATAL.

IN THE MEANTIME, THE GREAT CORNED BEEF ROUND-UP HAS CONTINUED WITH AUTHORITIES THROUGHOUT BRITAIN SEARCHING FOR THE TINS, EACH SIX-POUNDS IN WEIGHT, NAMES AS THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE ABERDEEN OUTBREAK.

AT THE SAME TIME, ONE OF THE LARGEST MANUFACTURERS OF MEAT PRODUCTS IN SCOTLAND, WHOSE PLANT IS EIGHT MILES (13 KMS) FROM ABERDEEN, TONIGHT ANNOUNCED A SHUTDOWN FOR TWO-WEEKS OF SAFEGUARD CUSTOMERS AND THE NAME OF ITS PRODUCTS.

THE FIRM DECLARED THAT THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF INFECTION AT ITS FACTORY, BUT, AS FOOD HANDLERS ON A NATIONAL SCALE, THEY FELT OBLIGED TO TAKE DRASTIC ACTION. THE PLANT'S 800 WORKERS WILL BE LAID OFF WITH FULL PAY.
