Background: About one hundred inmates armed with table and chair legs, went on the rampage at the Oakalla prison in Burnaby, near Vancouver in British Columbia. They held one wing for more than seventy hours before surrendering to prison staff on November 23. As security was intensified, the prison director, Stan Hofseth, said officials were not sure how the riot started but that the prison would be conducting an inquiry into it. No one was injured but several small fires were started before the prisoners surrendered.
