  • Description

A delegation from Mauritania, led by President Moktar Ould Daddah, which arrived in Peking on Tuesday (17 September) has reached an agreement on economic and technical cooperation with The People's Republic of China.

The agreement was signed on Thursday (19 September) by the Mauritanian Foreign Minister, Hamdi Ould Mouknass, and the Chinese Foreign Minister, Chi Peng-Fei. President Ould Daddah and the Chinese Vice-Premier, Teng Hsiao-Ping attended the signing ceremony.

Teng Hsiao-Ping was at Peking airport to welcome the Mauritanian delegation on behalf of the acting Chinese President Tung Pi-Wu and Premier Chou En-Lai. Premier Chou is reported to be recovering well from an operation after months of heart trouble.

On Wednesday (18 September), President Ould Daddah had talks with Teng Hsiao-Ping. He also met the ousted Khmer leader Norodom Sihanouk. No details of their talks were available but observers said a major topic might have been the coming vote at the United Nations on whether Prince Sihanouk's Royal Government of National Union should be admitted to the world body in place of the Phnom Penh Government.
