  • Description

A hydro-electric dam planned to power the economic development of Laos is nearing completion and is due to be opened on 2 December by King Savang Vathana.

It is the 30 million dollar Nam Ngum scheme, a part of the Mekong River Development Project. The dam is on the Mekong River close to its confluence at Ban Hai with the Nam Ngum, which flows into the main river from the Plain of Jars. It is a few miles (km) east of the administrative capital, Vientiane.

The project, a gift to Laos by nine countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States) is designed to produce 35,000 kilowatts initially; late its capacity can be increased to 135,000 kw. Japanese companies mainly constructed the dam.

SYNOPSIS: The Nam Ngum dam, designed to power the economic development of Laos, is nearing completion on the Mekong River, downstream form the Laotian administrative capital, Vientiane. It's due to be opened next week by king Savang Vathana.

Japanese engineering companies have been mainly responsible for the building of the dam. Nine countries shared the financing of the project, which took five years to complete and cost about 30 million dollars. Two year ago, after an attack on the works site by Pathet Lao guerrillas, the Japanese engineers threatened to leave the project, but since then there has been no further trouble.

The main purpose of the dam is to provide electric power -- the initial output of its water-driven turbines will be 35-thousand kilowatts, and spare capacity is available to increase output by another hundred thousand. The power will be fed to consumers in Laos and parts of northern Thailand.
