Background: The government-owned Indonesian Textile Company has been selling textiles at up to 70 per cent below normal price in Djakarta, as part of celebrations at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. President Suharto donated 275 tons of rice for poor citizens.

The textiles were sold in Indonesia's Sarinah Department store for a week before the last day of Ramadan - October 27. They were also on sale throughout Java and Bali for two weeks. The textiles were manufactured in Indonesia with the co-operation of foreign companies. Prices have been rising fast in Indonesia, so people flocked to buy at the lower rate.

President Suharto also observed the Islamic belief that the end of Ramadan is a time for charity. He bought 275 tons of imported rice for distribution to power citizens. The 100 tons of Djakarta was handed out from the Palace Guest House. Each person was allotted three-and-a-half litres, but many were left empty-handed outside the palace railing at the end of the day.
