    The white spot that Hay discovered on Saturn in 1933 is still regarded as one of the most significant events on Saturn, which as Hay says is normally rather featureless as seen through amateur telescopes. In 2010, amateur astronomer Anthony Wesley discovered an outburst of the spot, ahead of the Cassini spacecraft which was orbiting Saturn at the time.

    The man alongside him is Dr W H Steavenson, another very accomplished amateur astronomer, who later became President of the Royal Astronomical Society.
