Background: Sydney (Australia) police and ambulance men, in a dramatic race against rising seas, rescued an injured fisherman from the rocks at the base of a cliff at Kurnell.
The fisherman, Frank Grant, aged 73, sustained a broken leg when a freak gave wave smashed against the cliff. While the injured of a police rescue squad, ambulance men made a hazardous descent of the cliff face.
Foaming breakers dashed against the rocks as Seargent Harry Ware, strapped to a stretcher, began the descent to the trapped man.
People at the top of the cliff waited anxiously as the ambulance men raised the stretcher, and the tide closed in rapidly. Mr Grant told the party that his foot had been wedged in a rock crevice as the huge waved had pounded him.
