Background: Visnews interviewed Jan 21 Captain Bourne, the pilot of the Pan American 'plane which accompanied the Soviet Deputy Premier Mr. Mikoyan's S.A.S. airliner which developed serious engine trouble, flying from New York to Copenhagen.
Mr. Mikoyan's 'plane, a Scandinavian Airlines System DC-7 on a regular flight, was some 130 miles ahead of Captain Bourne's aircraft when the super-charger of the out starboard engine failed, followed twenty minutes later by fire in the outer port engine.
Captain Bourne altered his course and caught up with the crippled S.A.S. liner as it tried to make for the American Airforce base at Argentina, Newfoundland. The Pan American 'plane stayed with Mr. Mikoyan's 'plane until it had landed safely, whereupon Capt. Bourne continued on his flight to London.
