    FOREIGN INTERVENTION IN THE SUDAN WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPLIT BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH, SAID THE SUDAN PRIME MINISTER, MR MUHAMMAD MAHGOUB, IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).HE WENT ON TO DENY HIS GOVERNMENT WAS WAGING A 'RELIGIOUS WAR' AGAINST AFRICANS IN THE SOUTH.

    MR.MAHGOUB WAS SPEAKING AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN THE KENYA CAPITAL AT THE END OF A FOUR-DAY VISIT.HE SAID IT WAS HIS GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION TO SHOULDER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PROTECTING THE LIFE AND PROPERTY OF EVERY CITIZEN, WHETHER FROM NORTH OR SOUTH.

    "AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME, FULLY DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE OF THIS OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE WILL BE REVEALED BY MY GOVERNMENT, AND WHEN THIS IS DONE THOSE WHO CLAIM THAT THE TROUBLES IN THE SOUTH ARE CAUSED BY ETHIC OR RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES WILL HIDE THEIR FACES."
    HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT REPORTS OF SEVERAL THOUSAND CASUALTIES IN THE SOUTH GROSSLY EXAGGERATED.IN AN INCIDENT LAST MONTH AT JUBA, 100 PEOPLE HAD BEEN KILLED AND AT WAU THERE HAD BEEN 72 CASUALTIES.MANY MORE PEOPLE, WENT ON THE PRIME MINISTER, HAD BEEN KILLED BY OUTLAWS THAN BY HIS FORCES.
