  • Description

United Nations Middle East envoy Gunnar Jarring discussed the resumed Arab-Israeli peace talks on Friday (January 8) with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir at her residence in Jerusalem.

Also present at the two-and-a-half hours of talks were Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban, Israel's U.N. representative Joseph Tekoah, and Mr. Jarring's political adviser, New Zealander Mr. Ian Berendsen.

Foreign Minister Mr. Eban told reporters afterwards that his impression of the talks was very good, and that the discussion had been useful.

A brief Government communique said the talks had been positive and constructive, and that they would continue during lunch on Saturday at the Foreign Minister's residence.

But in line with an official news blackout on tails of the meetings, neither Mr. Eban nor the communique specified the topics discussed.

No official reason has been given in Israel for the invitation to Dr. Jarring to visit Jerusalem.

But political observers believe that the Israeli invitation stemmed partly from Israel's desire to have the peace talks conducted at Foreign Minister level, and not at that of U.N. delegates as demanded by Egypt and Jordan.

Israeli leaders have dismissed as pure propaganda Arab charges that the invitation was part of Israeli delaying tactics.
