Background: South Korea's first underground train was given a trial run in the capital, Seoul, on Thursday (11 April). The subway is scheduled to open to the public in four months time.
The 6.2 miles (10 kilometres) of subway will link Seoul's main railway station to another station in the east of the city, taking commuters under the busiest street. Construction started three years ago, largely financed by a low-interest loan from Japan.
Six electric cars were imported from Japan for the trial run, and fifty-four more are due in South Korea before August 15th when passengers will start to use the system.
When the subway is completed it will cover nearly the whole capital and will eventually be linked to the suburban rail systems around Seoul which have been electrified recently with part of the Japanese loan money.
Relations with Japan have suffered some difficulties in the past year and this, plus the huge cost of the subway, has led to criticism of the project by opposition politicians.
