  • Description

London today (14 October) got its first preview of what fashionable women will be wearing next Spring - and all the dresses on show went below the knees.

At a Bond Street fashion show, eleven of Britain's leading young designers, including Mary Quant, all ruled that mini-skirts are out, at least for the next 12 months.

But there was no set length. Skirt levels ranged from just below the knee to just above the ankle. Most of the dresses on show were softly feminine but sophisticated.

The big London Fashion Week opens on Monday and the 70 manufacturers taking part are also expected to ban the mini. The week is organised by the Clothing Export Council which is expected to gain export orders from it in the region of GBP2,000,000 (nearly 5,000,000 dollars).

SYNOPSIS: London got a preview on Wednesday of what fashionable women will be wearing next Spring when Britain's leading designers showed their latest ideas. This trouser suit is by Hilary Floyd.

Left, the Gaucho look, from Rosalind Yehuda, kin linen and cotton with a striped undercoat. Right, an elegant flower-printed dress in nylon organza, by John Bates.

Mary Quant can be relied on to produce something unusual - like these black Crepe de Chine knickerbockers.

A mid-length chiffon evening dress. all the designers decreed that the mini is out - whatever husbands and boy-friends may think.

Finally a printed silk dress from Thea Porter, emphasising the feminine but sophisticated mood of the designs. Wednesday's show was a curtain-raiser to the coming London Fashion Week which is expected to win GBP2,000,000 in export orders.
