  • Description

The three missionaries killed in Rhodesia by a lone black gunman have been buried in Bulawayo, the country's second city -- in the middle of a controversy about who was responsible for their deaths.

SYNOPSIS: Among the three was the director of the Regina Mundi Secondary School mission outside Bulawayo, 65-year-old Father Possenti Weggarten. The mission was almost deserted while it inhabitants and pupils went into town for the funeral. Also killed were sister Maria Francis vanden Berg, a worker at the mission, and a former Bishop of Bulawayo, Bishop Gregor Schmitt. They were driving to another mission to visit a sick friend when an African wearing a balaclava helmet and a camouflage uniform, carrying a sub machine-gun, stopped the car. He gunned them down after asking for money -- sparking off a row among black and white Rhodesians about responsibility for the killings. Rhodesian nationalist leaders at the Geneva conference in Switzerland on the nation's future said it was the work of Rhodesian under-cover security forces, seeking to make trouble for the nationalists. Prime Minister Ian Smith flatly dismissed these claims--saying it was simply another example of guerrilla atrocities.
