  • Description

East Berlin's Marx-Engels square, where will the big military parades are held, is the site this year of a Christmas market and fair.

It's the first fair in the square for several years.

The square has been decorated with lights and a huge Christmas tree, and there are swings, marry-go-rounds and Ferris wheels for children.

More than two-and-a-half million people have visited the fair.

SYNOPSIS: Christmas time in Marx-Engels square in East Berlin.

For the first time in several years, a Christmas fair is being held there.

The square is better known for the military and May Day parades...to the accompaniment of martial music, rattling tanks and military boots.

Christmas carols have replaced the military music and the lights and attractions would make a small child's eyes pop. (PAUSE FOR FIVE SECONDS) Last month, gales that swept East Germany wrecked dozens of special stalls and huts and damaged the giant Christmas tree set up for the occasion. For a while the fair was threatened, but the damage was repaired... and the show went on.

So far, the fair has been visited by more than two-and-a-half-million people.
