  • Description

The civilian cabinet appointed by the new military regime in Greece met for the first time on Monday (November 26th). The meeting was held to approve a policy statement after Sunday's bloodless coup which ousted President Georges Papadopoulos.

Life in Athens and Salonica returned to normal after the lifting of the curfew which was imposed on Sunday to enable the armed forces to carry out their well planned coup.

The military leaders immediately appointed a new President, General Phaedon Gizikis, aged 65, who in turn appointed Mr. Adamantios Androutso-populos, a 54-year-old lawyer and former Finance Minister, to head the civilian cabinet.

Deposed President Papadopoulos was still under guard at his luxurious villa in the seaside resort of Lagonissi, south of Athens. Many of his friends were also placed under arrest, in an apparent move to head off any possible reaction against the new military regime. They included the former chiefs of the Army and the Air Force.
