  • Description

The Cannes International Film Festival closes tomorrow, (Friday). The well-preened stars will gather their screen honours, and the well-tanned starlets carry their aspirations to other hunting grounds.

More that 1,500 stars and would-be stars, producers and would-be producers have been busily discovering each other during the last fortnight. Some 30 films from 17 countries are contending for the 'Golden Palm' Best Film Award.

Firm favourite for the 'Golden Palm' is Antonioni's first British film 'Blow Up'. Starring Vanessa Redgrave, already winner of several 'Best Actress' awards, and newcomer David Hemmings, the film captures in brilliantly-controlled colour the hollow rattle of swinging London.

As always, there have been the publicity-rich tantrums. Joseph Strick's 'Ulysses' has been angrily withdrawn from competition after near-riots during its showing -- a furor largely caused by curiously insensitive subtitling.

And there have been other more serious sidelights -- Greek film star Irene Papas has expressed her fear of returning to Greece lest she should be jailed by the new military regime. Her composer friend, Mikis Theodorakis, was arrested after the recent army coup.

Tomorrow, the twelve-member jury will pass their judgement on the films. The judges include American actress Shirley Maclaine, director Claude Lelouch, and Sengalese director Ousmane Sembene -- the first African ever to have been included on the panel.
