    THE WORLD'S LARGEST SHIP - AND THE FIRST WITH NUCLEAR PROPULSION RECENTLY COMPLETED SUCCESSFUL TRIALS IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN OFF NEWPORT NEWS, USA. SHE IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER "ENTERPRISE"(85,000 TONS) BUILT BY THE NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING AND DRY DOCK COMPANY FOR THE US NAVY.

    "ENTERPRISE" IS POWERED BY EIGHT NUCLEAR REACTORS AND IS CAPABLE OF SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 30 KNOTS. THE SHIP CAN STEAM 20 TIMES ROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT REFUELLING, IT IS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED. THE MAMMOTH CARRIER - 1.100 FEET LONG AND 25 STOREYS HIGH - WILL SOON BE HANDED OVER TO THE NAVY, TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. CONSTRUCTION WORK IN 1958.

    WHEN OPERATIONAL, "ENTERPRISE" WILL BE ABLE TO CATAPULT 100 JET COMBAT AIRCRAFT FROM HER FOUR-AND-A-HALF ACRE FLIGHT DECK IN 15 MINUTES. THE STEAM-OPERATED CATAPULTS ARE DEVELOPED FROM THE BRITISH INVENTION INSTALLED IN THE ROYAL NAVY'S FRONT-LINE CARRIERS. "ENTERPRISES", WITH A COMPLEMENT OF 4,600 OFFICERS AND MEN, JOINS THE GROWING NUMBER OF NUCLEAR SUBMARINES IN THE US NAVY.
