  • Description

INVESTIGATORS OF THE CIVIL AERONAUTICS BOARD HAVE NOW GONE TO ELKTON, MARYLAND -- IN THE NORTHEAST UNITED STATES, TO EXAMINE WRECKAGE OF THE PAN AMERICAN BOEING 707, WHICH EXPLODED AND CRASHED THERE ON SUNDAY NIGHT.ALL 81 PEOPLE ON BOARD WERE KILLED.TODAY (TUESDAY) ANOTHER BOEING IN TROUBLE: IT WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING ON A FLIGHT FROM PAKISTAN TO LONDON, AND HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT AN R.A.F.BASE IN CYPRUS.NONE OF THE 97 PASSENGERS ON BOARD WERE INJURED.

THE JET AIRLINER, ON A FLIGHT FROM PUERTO RICO TO PHILADELPHIA, HAD JUST TAKEN OFF FROM BALTIMORE FOR THE LAST STAGE OF ITS JOURNEY.IT HAD REACHED 5,000 FEET, WHERE CONDITIONS WERE VERY STORMY, WHEN THERE WERE A NUMBER OF EXPLOSIONS AND THE AIRCRAFT DISINTEGRATED.WRECKAGE WAS FOUND OVER AN AREA OF FOUR SQUARE MILES.

A TAPE RECORDING OF THE FINAL DESPERATE MESSAGE FROM THE PLANE TO THE PHILADELPHIA GROUND CONTROL, WAS PLAYED TO REPORTERS YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

ONE REPORT SUGGESTED THE AIRCRAFT WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTING, BUT ANOTHER SAID THE SEVERE TURBULANCE IN THE AREA COULD HAVE CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO LOSE CONTROL.( MODERN AIRCRAFT ARE PROTECTED AGAINST LIGHTING, AND IN THE UNITED STATES IT HAS NEVER BEEN OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED AS ADEQUATE EXPLANATION OF A CRASH).

TODAY (TUESDAY) IT IS REPORTED THAT THE LONDON INSURANCE MARKET IS LIKELY TO BEAR MOST OF THE 4 MILLION DOLLAR CLAIM FOR THE LOSS OF THE AIRCRAFT.

(THE LAST MAJOR CRASH OF THIS KIND WAS ON NOVEMBER 29TH THIS YEAR, WHEN A TRANS-CANADA AIRLINES DC 8, CRASHED NEAR MONTREAL, KILLING ALL 118 ON BOARD.THE LAST PAN AMERICAN CRASH WAS IN 1957 WHEN BOEING PISTON-ENGINE STRATOCRUISER WITH 44 PEOPLE ON BOARD DISAPPEARED OVER THE PACIFIC.
