    "Operation Pedestrian" has brought temporary freedom from the motorcar in the centre of Paris in the city authoritie's boldest experiment so far to make Paris a more pleasant place to live.

    The vast Place de la Concorde, one of the city's busiest traffic hubs, and a stretch of the Champs Elysees were closed to motor vehicles. Pedestrians strolled peacefully where normally there is a screeching honking mass of speeding cars.

    The experiment began on Thursday (August 15) - a public holiday.

    The pedestrians will continue to have their way until Sunday (August 18).

    Senior police officers have said the streets couldn't be closed off permanently.

    But the main complaint from the people of Paris was that the area closed to traffic wasn't larger.

    SYNOPSIS: "Operation Pedestrian" in Paris has closed off famous areas in the city centre to the motorcar in the boldest traffic experiment so far by the city authorities.

    On Friday people walked peacefully in streets that are usually full of screeching honking cars.

    The experiment began on Thursday - a public holiday and one of the quietest traffic days of the year. Some senior police officers say it would be impossible to close off these areas permanently.

    And although the police may have doubts, the main complaint from Parisians was that the area closed to traffic was not big enough.

    Walkers will continue to have their way until Sunday. The environmentalists believe thy are winning in Paris, President Valery Giscard D'Estaing is building up a reputation as a saviour of the old city. An urban motorway has been vetoed ad a new park ordered in place of a concrete commercial centre.
