Background: The trial of 92 men accused of trying to overthrow Egyptian President Anwar Sadat started in Cairo on Saturday (14 December) ... and turned into pandemonium. The Judge was called a heathen; lawyers were called liars and it was alleged that the defendants were victims of both hypnotism and torture.
The accusations were made during a brief session at Cairo's Supreme Court.
The trial has again been postponed, this time until 18 January. it was supposed to have begun last month but was put off until Saturday. But the Judge postponed it gain to enable the lawyers to go through documents and prepare their pleas.
The men have pleaded not guilty to charges of attacking Cairo's Military Technical Academy last April. During the incident 11 people died and 27 were injured. They were also accused of criminal conspiracy and pre-meditated murder.
Most of them are students in their 20's. They were alleged to have ben led by Saleh Abdallah Sarreya, a Palestinian and former employee of an Arab League agency.
At Saturday's hearing, their lawyer charged that the trial was unlawful because the courtroom was full of intelligence officials and the State Security Police had fabricated the case and tortured the accused. And several of the accused called the Judge a heathen.
