    THE NEW ASSEMBLY'S FIRST TASK WILL BE TO DRAW UP A REVISED CONSTITUTION FOR THE COUNTRY. THE GOVERNMENT HAS HAILED THE MASSIVE VOTE TODAY AS A MAJOR VICTORY AGAINST THE VIETCONG AND AN OVERWHELMING EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT FOR AMERICAN POLICY FOR SOUTH VIETNAM.

    THE VIETCONG LAUNCHED ELEVEN HOURS OF VIOLENCE OF THE EVE OF THE ELECTION AND 19 GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, TROOPS AND CIVILIANS LOST THEIR LIVES. ABOUT 120 OTHERS WERE WOUNDED.

    ON THE EVE OF THE ELECTIONS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, MANY OF THEM CHILDREN WELL BELOW VOTING AGE, THRONGED THE GAILY-LIT CENTRAL MARKET PLACE TO BE ENTERTAINED BY VARIETY SHOWS, CHINESE DRAGON DANCES AND BEAT MUSIC.

    THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT STAGED A TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION THROUGH THE STREETS OF SAIGON TO URGE ALL TO VOTE. THE MARKET PLACE SQUARE, FESTOONED WITH ELECTION BANNERS AND DECORATED WITH PROPAGANDA TABLEAUX, WAS SURROUNDED BY ARMED POLICE AS A PRECAUTIONS AGAINST VIETCONG ATTACKERS.

    SOUTH VIETNAMESE BUDDHISTS CAMPAIGNED AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT AND ABOUT TWO HUNDRED OF THEM STAGED A THREE-DAY HUNGER STRIKE TILL THE POLLS CLOSED.
