    ON A VISIT TO THAILAND THIS WEEK, A DELEGATION OF AUSTRALIAN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT SAW SOMETHING OF AUSTRALIA'S IMPORTANT WORK UNDER THE COLOMBO PLAN AND PAID A VISIT TO AUSTRALIAN SERVICEMEN WITH SEATO FORCES IN THAILAND.

    THE DELEGATION OF THIRTEEN MEMBERS FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SENATE IS LED BY THE POSTMASTER GENERAL, MR.C.W.DAVIDSON.THEY SPENT FIVE DAYS IN THAILAND CURING A THREE WEEKS FAMILIARIZATION TOUR OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA.

    THE PARTY VISITED KHON KEAN IN THE UNDEVELOPED NORTH EASTERN AREA OF THAILAND WHERE NINE AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS ARE SUPERVISING A ROAD BUILDING SCHEME WHICH SHOULD DO MUCH TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLES IN THE AREA.

    THE PROJECT IS AIMED AT THE CONSTRUCTION OF LOW-COST ALL-WEATHER ROADS, FEEDER ROADS WHICH WILL OPEN THE WAY FOR THE PEOPLE TO MARKET THEIR FARM PRODUCTS IN THE SOUTH.THE ROADS WILL NOT ONLY HELP TO STRENGTHEN THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY OF THE AREA BUT WILL BE OF STRATEGIC VALUE AS THE AREA IS CLOSE TO THE BORDER OF LAOS AND SUSCEPTIBLE TO COMMUNIST INFILTRATION.

    AUSTRALIA HAS GIVEN MORE THAN ONE AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS FOR THE PROJECT, AND IMPORTANT PART OF WHICH IS TRAINING THAI ENGINEERS TO TAKE OVER FROM THE AUSTRALIAN WHEN THEY LEAVE IN ABOUT TWO YEARS TIME.

    THE AUSTRALIANS, WHO HAVE WORKED ON THE SHOWY MOUNTAINS SCHEME AT HOME, ARE TEACHING THE THAIS TO MAKE THE BEST POSSIBLE USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS FOR ROAD BUILDING IN ORDER TO SAVE COSTS.THE HEAVY MACHINERY USED ON THE ROAD PROJECT, TRACTORS, GRADERS AND ROCK-BLASTING EQUIPMENT, WAS SENT TO THAILAND FROM AUSTRALIA.THE COLOMBO PLAN TEAM HOPE TO COMPLETE ABOUT 200 MILE OF COUNTRY FEEDER ROADS BEFORE THEY GO HOME AND LEAVE BEHIND A WELL-TRAINED TEAM TO CARRY ON THE WORK.

    MR.DAVIDSON AND THE DEPUTY LEADER OF THE DELEGATION, MR.L.C.HAYLEN, MHR, LABOUR NSW, PLANTED AUSTRALIAN EUCALYPTUS TREES AT THE AUSTRALIAN HEADQUARTERS AT KHON KEAN AS A MOMENT OF AUSTRALIA'S HELP.

    AFTER VISITING THE ROAD-BUILDERS, THE PARLIAMENTARIANS TRAVELLED TO UBON, WHERE AN RAAF CONTINGENT HAS BEEN STATIONED SINCE THE MIDDLE OF LAST YEAR WHEN SEATO FORCES WERE RACED TO THAILAND.

    THE MEMBERS SPENT SOME TIME QUESTIONING RAAF PERSONNEL ABOUT THEIR SERVICE LIFE IN THAILAND.
