  • Description

MORE THAN 500 CARS, VANS AND COACHES, CARRYING THOUSANDS OF FLEMISH NATIONALISTS, SET OUT FROM DIXMUDE TODAY (SUNDAY) ALONG THE COAST ROAD TO OSTEND AND OTHER SEASIDE RESORTS.

THE FLEMISH NATIONALISTS, WHO EARLIER HAD HELD THEIR ANNUAL RALLY AT DIXMUDE'S MEMORIAL TO THEIR WORLD WAR I DEAD, WERE TAKING PART IN A "SEAFRONT - IS - FLEMISH - TERRITORY" CAMPAIGN. FLEMISH SPEAKERS MADE FIERY SPEECHES AT THE RALLY.

TODAY'S DEMONSTRATION WAS THE LATEST MOVE IN BELGIUM'S LONG DRAWN OUT LANGUAGE DISPUTE BETWEEN THE DUTCH-SPEAKING AND PREDOMINANTLY CATHOLIC INHABITANTS OF FLANDERS, AND THE FRENCH-SPEAKING WALLOONS.

THE FLEMINGS LIVE MAINLY IN THE NORTH AND WEST OF THE COUNTRY AND THE WALLOONS IN THE SOUTH AND EAST. THE CAPITAL, BRUSSELS, IS BI-LINGUAL. EXTREMISTS WANT TO BREAK THE COUNTRY UP INTO A LOOSE FEDERATION OF THE TWO RACES.

WALLOON NATIONALISTS RETALIATED AGAINST TODAY'S FLEMISH DEMONSTRATION BY URGING FRENCH-SPEAKING BELGIANS TO DESERT THE COUNTRY'S SEASIDE RESORTS AND CONTINUE THEIR HOLIDAYS ON NEARBY FRENCH BEACHES. MANY TOURISTS DID LEAVE THE BEACHES TO AVOID POSSIBLE INCIDENTS.

BAD WEATHER DETERRED COUNTER DEMONSTRATIONS AND THERE WERE FEW INCIDENTS. THE WORST CLASH CAME IN OSTEND WHEN THE DEMONSTRATORS, CARRYING PLACARDS IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES READING: "THE SEAFRONT IS FLEMISH SOIL," AND "BOYCOTT FRENCH-SPEAKING BUSINESS, MET COUNTER DEMONSTRATORS. FIGHTING STARTED AND POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO RESTORE ORDER. TEN PEOPLE WERE REPORTED SLIGHTLY WOUNDED.
