Dr. Kurt Waldheim was reappointed to a second five-year term as the United Nations Secretary-General on Wednesday (8 December). In an acceptance speech he pledged to try to make the organisation more responsive to world problems.
SYNOPSIS: The 146-nation General Assembly approved Waldheim's reappointment by acclamation. Earlier the Security Council of the United Nations had recommended the 57-year-old Austrian diplomat for re-election. He emerged as the only candidate in the second round of secret voting after a first-round veto by China. Peking wanted someone from the Third World. The President for the 31st Session of the General Assembly, Ambassador Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe, of Sri Lanka, announced the reappointment.
Then Dr. Waldheim reaffirmed his oaths of office and delivered a speech of acceptance.
Mr. Waldheim's second term of office begins on 1st January next year.
