THE FIRST SESSION OF OFFICIAL TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO PRIME MINISTERS GOT UNDERWAY YESTERDAY MORNING (TUESDAY) AND LASTED TWO HOURS TWENTY MINUTES. AFTER THE SESSION MR SMITH TOLD REPORTERS THE TALKS HAD BEEN CORDIAL, BUT WHEN ASKED IF ANY NEW PROSPECTS HAD EMERGED HE REPLIED: "NOT SO FAR".

ABOUT A THOUSAND AFRICANS WAITED OUTSIDE MR SMITH'S OFFICE AND SAW MR WILSON ARRIVE. THEY WAITED IN THE HOT SUN AND WERE STILL THERE WHEN THE SESSION BROKE UP.

AFTER THE MORNING MEETING, MR WILSON KEPT UP THE CRACKING PACE OF THE VISIT WITH THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF 'OUTSIDE' MEETINGS DESIGNED TO FIND OUT THE VIEWS OF ALL SECTIONS OF OPINION IN RHODESIA. HE SAW MR JOSIAH GONDO, LEADER OF THE OFFICIAL OPPOSITION PARTY. THE UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY AND THREE OF MR GONDO'S COLLEAGUES. THEN HE HAD MEETINGS WITH DR ARHN PALLEY, THE ONLY EUROPEAN M.P. IN OPPOSITION AND OTHER INDEPENDENT MEMBERS, LEADERS OF THE INDIAN AND ASIAN COMMUNITIES, AND SIR ROY WELENSKY, THE FORMER FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER.

(MR WILSON ALSO WANTED TO SEE LEADING MEMBERS OF THE RULING RHODESIAN FRONT PARTY, BUT THEY ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING: "AS THE PARTY HAS EVERY CONFIDENCE IN MR IAN SMITH AND IT IS MR IAN SMITH WHOM MR WILSON HAS COME TO SEE, IT WAS CONSIDERED ADVISABLE TO LEAVE THE MATTERS UNDER DISCUSSION TO THESE TWO GENTLEMEN.")
