  • Description

The West Indies cricket team quashed suggestions that they would be "easy game" for the Australian fast bowlers when they thrashed a Queensland State side by 90 runs with more than a day to spare.

The Queensland team were all out for 127 runs in their second innings after a first innings score of only 164. The West Indies had first use of the wicket and scored 381 runs.

The game was played on a pitch which was described by the captain of the West Indies team, Clive Lloyd, as "an excuse for a first class wicket".

There had been heavy storms before the match which turned the wicket into what was described as a "quagmire".

Grass clippings were sprinkled over the pitch in an effort to keep it together during the match but it deteriorated under the hot Queensland sun to a mixture of dust and grass clippings...and played accordingly.

It was a vicious track from the start ??? with several West Indies players being injured by fast rising bumpers.

But the West Indies spin bowlers, revelled on the treacherous pitch and the small left-arm bowler, Inshan Ali, became almost unplayable as the wicket broke up. Inshan collected eleven wickets for the loss of only 78 runs.

The West Indies captain said spin was obviously going to be a big factor in the test match as "the test wicket is not far away from where we have just played so there couldn't be that much difference."
The Queensland captain and the new Australian captain Greg Chappell also voiced criticism about the condition of the pitch.
