  • Description

AN AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE REINFORCEMENT UNIT WENT OUT ON A FAMILIARISATION JUNGLE WARFARE TRAINING LAST WEEK.

THE OUTING TOOK PLACE NORTHWEST OF NUI DUT, 45 MILES NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON.

THE REINFORCEMENT UNIT WAS FORMED IN VIETNAM IN APRIL LAST YEAR. ON JOINING THE UNIT, SOLDIERS SPEND THEIR FIRST TWO WEEK IN BATTLE TESTS. THEY THEN BECOME PART OF AN INFANTRY COMPANY WITH THE UNIT AND CARRY OUT PATROLLING AND SOME OPERATIONS AS DIRECTED BY THE TASK FORCE.

THE UNIT'S TASK IS TO PROVIDE SECURITY FOR ABOUT 3,000 VIETNAMESE REFUGEES, MAINLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM VIETCONG ATTACK. THESE FAMILIES HAD BEEN RE-SETTLED OUT OF THE VIETCONG SLOPE 30 REGION, LONG REGARDED BY THE ENEMY AS A TRADITIONAL SUPPLY AND STAGING AREA.

UNTIL SUCH TIME AS OUTPOSTS FOR VIETNAMESE REGIONAL OR POPULAR FORCES CAN BE COMPLETED AND LOCAL SECURITY TROOPS HOUSED, THE PROTECTION OF THE PEOPLE IS BEING HANDLED BY AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE ELEMENTS SUCH AS THE REINFORCEMENT COMPANY.

THE WORK IS REGARDED BY AUSTRALIAN TROOPS AS VALUABLE IN-COUNTRY TRAINING GETTING THEM TO THEIR PEAK WHICH IS NECESSARY IF THEY ARE TO MEET AND MAINTAIN THE PACE NORMALLY SET BY THE 2ND AND 7TH BATTALIONS, ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT.
