  • Description

The French Navy's new 22,000-ton aircraft-carrier Clemenceau - first ever to be built in France - left Brest, Nov 23, for her first sea trials.

Capable of a maximum speed of 32 knots, the Clemenceau is about 850 feet long and 150 feet wide. Equipped with steam catapult for fast take-off, she will carry 60 aircraft, including helicopters, interceptor one-seaters, anti-submarine three-seaters, and "Etandards IV M" for tactical nuclear bombing. Accommodation on board is for 2,700 officers and men, including aircraft pilots.

Laid down in 1955 and launched about two years ago, the Clemenceau will be commissioned and enter into active service in the French Mediterranean Fleet in 18 months. By then, something like 30,000 million francs - nearly GBP22 million will have been spent on the ship, and 25,000 million francs on her armament, aircraft and helicopters. A sister ship, the Foch, is now building at Brest.

Labour Party leaders and delegates are now in Blackpool for the two- day conference that opens tomorrow. It's to discuss Labour's election defeat and future policy. From Euston special relief trains were being run to carry delegates from London and the South, including the Party leader, Mr. Gaitskell, who's to address the Assembly. His wife travelled with him. The Party Chairman, Mrs. Barbara Castle, had a word with Douglas Brown.

Dr. Edith Summerskill and Mr. Aneurin Bevan will also be at the Assembly. The Party's usual Annual Conference was cancelled because it clashed with the General Election.

On their way, and in our nine-fifty-five bulletin well's have a report on conference prospects from Blackpool
