    A MOUNTAIN CABLE RAILWAY FEATURING WHAT ARE CLAIMED TO BE THE WORLD'S LARGEST GONDOLAS WAS OPENED RECENTLY AT THE JAPANESE SCENIC RESORT OF HAKONE, SOUTH-WEST OF TOKYO.STRETCHING OVER THE FUJI PARK, IT RUNS FROM THE SHORES OF LAKE ASHI TO THE SUMMIT OF MOUNT KOMAGATAKE, 1,350 METRES ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

    AT THE OPENING CEREMONY, PERFORMED BY THE GOVERNOR OF KANAGAWA PREFECTURE, 20,000 BALLOONS WERE RELEASED AS HELICOPTERS FLEW OVERHEAD AND SPEEDBOATS CIRCLED OFFSHORE.THE GOVERNOR THEN TRIED THE CABLEWAY FOR HIMSELF.

    GONDOLAS, EACH CARRYING 101 PASSENGER, MAKE THE HALF-MILE TRIP -- AT AN INCLINE OF 30 DEGREES -- IN LESS THAN TEN MINUTES.THIS ADDED ATTRACTION TO AN ALREADY POPULAR TOURIST RESORT IS EXPECTED TO DRAW THOUSANDS OF OVERSEAS VISITORS WHO WILL BE IN JAPAN NEXT YEAR FOR THE TOKYO OLYMPIC GAMES.
