  • Description

A May Day rally in Accra on Thursday (1 May) was highlighted by a call for "the total liberation of the whole of Africa."
The appeal came in an address by J.D. Akumu, the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), who said that it was Ghanaians who first "lit the flame" for independence in Africa under their late President Kwame Nkrumah.

"While the enemy has been defeated in some areas," Mr. Akumu said, "we still have to fight....and we have also come to know that political independence is not enough. We all know that we have a rich continent, but that our wealth is still controlled either directly or through trade machinations by forces outside Africa. This is why we in Africa now insist that we must control our resources and we insist on better trade agreements."
The rally featured a parade by thousands of Ghanaian workers at Independence Square. They were also addressed by Lt.-Col. K.B. Agbo, Commissioner for Welfare and Co-operatives, and Mr. A.M. Issifu, Secretary-General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress.
